Tapachula 2020

Here in Tapachula you can see the effects of anti-immigrant politics around the world. The increased border tightening of “Fortress Europe” and the Trump administration’s efforts to “externalize" the US Southern border, have generated a bureaucratic sinkhole in which refugees from Africa, Asia, Central America and the Caribbean get stuck for months.

As the media foments xenophobia by warning of the imminent arrival of a new migrant caravan, dubbed El Diablo [The Devil], we talk with young people migrating from Somalia, Cuba, Haiti and El Salvador to get their perspective on the situation. We also speak with local human rights activists, members of Tapachula’s Chinese community, and Mama Africa - a Mexican woman who cooks international dishes for Asian and African migrants.
