Viva la Meche
La Merced is part of the bazaar economy, consisting of 329 indoor public markets and 1303 outdoor markets, commonly referred to as "tianguis,” in Mexico City. It represents the primary source of retail supply in the metropolis. It is estimated that there are more than 8,000 retailers in the indoor and commercial corridors and as many informal vendors in the adjacent streets throughout La Merced. This is an area disregarded by public policies and strongly stigmatized by the media. Public opinion also perceives a dangerous and filthy neighborhood consumed by violence. In recent decades, the political strategy by the government of Mexico City has not only led to the fragmentation of the barrio but to a clear socio-economic differentiation between the area comprising the historic center and the market area.
